Disentangled Emotion-Controllable Color Palette Generation via β-CVAE with Conditional Prior
Research Motivation
Emotion-guided color palette design has long depended on subjective human intuition. Conventional computational methods primarily utilize discrete semantic labels, which fail to support fine-grained navigation in continuous affective space or allow emotional adjustments while retaining an established aesthetic style. To address this limitation, this research proposes a generative framework conditioned on continuous affective dimensions, transforming emotion into an interactive, controllable parameter while safeguarding stylistic diversity.
Methodology
The framework disentangles the latent space into an explicit emotion subspace and a residual style subspace. Grounded in psychophysical color image scales, emotional dimensions are quantified across "Warm–Cool" and "Soft–Hard" axes. An XGBoost model predicts continuous affective coordinates for 53,698 web-harvested color palettes, and a β-Conditional Variational Autoencoder (β-CVAE) learns the underlying generative distribution.
- Dual Latent Subspaces: Decouples the representation into an emotion subspace (encoding affective coordinates) and a residual style subspace (capturing color harmony and variance independent of emotion), enabling diverse palette synthesis under identical emotional inputs.
- Conditional Prior & Auxiliary Alignment Loss: Uses emotion coordinates as conditional priors to guide latent distributions; an auxiliary alignment loss guarantees that emotional prompts exert precise, directional control over palette generation.
- Decorrelation Constraint: Applies a decorrelation loss between the two subspaces to prevent affective leakage into style dimensions, achieving clean orthogonal separation in representation.
Experimental Results
Spearman rank correlation coefficients between the emotion subspace and target emotion dimensions achieved 0.92 and 0.95 (plummeting to 0.11 when the alignment mechanism was ablated). Correlation between style representations and emotional conditions remained below 0.06, demonstrating rigorous disentanglement. Smooth latent space interpolation confirms that affective modulation occurs reliably along continuous navigation paths.
Key Contributions
